Hot-dip galvanizing and zinc plating are different coating processes. HDG typically produces thicker zinc coatings; electroplated zinc is usually thinner and smoother. Neither of these descriptions can determine the applicability of a specific bolt or connection in itself.

For bulk procurement, determine product, exposure, coating system, and mating thread requirements before comparing prices. Do not substitute one finish for another unless permitted by procurement specifications or approved by the responsible party.

1. Determine the complete coating system

Hot dip galvanizing applies zinc by immersing steel components in molten zinc. Zinc plating uses an electrical current to deposit zinc. On fasteners, 'galvanizing' can refer to electroplating, so the term 'galvanizing' alone is an incomplete procurement description.

The electroplating system may include conversion coatings, sealants, topcoats, and lubricants. Include the required treatments in the specifications, rather than relying on colors such as "transparent zinc"

General coating characteristicsTypically thicker zinc coatingsTypically thinner coatings
Typical appearanceusually gray and texturedusually smoother or brighter, depending on the treatment

These are typical differences, not acceptance limits. According to applicable standards, coating requirements are specified; Do not infer compliance from appearance.

2. Use exposure conditions to narrow down the range of options

For dry, protected indoor service, zinc plating may be a candidate where the specified coating system meets the protection and dimensional requirements. Possible condensation, cleaning exposure, and storage conditions are included in the review.

For repeated outdoor wetting, if allowed by product specifications and able to meet coating and assembly requirements, HDG may be a candidate coating process. This is not an approval for every outdoor connection, nor is it a commitment to specific maintenance intervals.

Provide practical conditions for technical selection for salt exposure, immersion, high temperature, or chemical substances. Coastal atmosphere, splash exposure, and continuous immersion are not equivalent. The labels' HDG 'and' Marine Grade 'do not define the approval system for these conditions.

Before specifying the coating, small features, fine threads, and restricted clearances also need to be reviewed. Finished components must meet protection and assembly requirements.

3. Define bolts and nuts together

The coating thickness affects the thread clearance. Designate bolts, nuts, or threaded components as a component, including thread status for acceptance inspection. Shared nominal diameter cannot establish compatibility.

For individual product details, see ourDIN 933 / ISO 4017 fully threaded hex boltsandDIN 934 / IS 1363 hex nuts. Confirm the required grade, coating and thread compatibility for the specified assembly before ordering.

Request the supplier to determine how the proposed components will adapt to the specified coating. The response should include:

Complete bolt and nut thread designations, pitch or threads per inch, and required thread classes.

Product and coating specifications, as well as required versions.

Applicable pre coating and post coating thread requirements.

The specified requirements for measurement, assembly inspection, and fitting of components.

Any specified lubrication or installation requirements.

Do not choose oversized nuts solely for the purpose of fitting coated bolts. The thread-clearance arrangement must comply with the governing requirements and must not be improvised during assembly.

For help preparing the thread information, see theMetric vs UNC/UNF Fasteners: Thread RFQ Checklist.

4. Check the grade and process applicability separately

The name of surface treatment cannot determine the mechanical grade or approve the coating process for that grade. High strength fasteners require product specific review, including relevant hydrogen embrittlement control and dimensional requirements.

ISO 10684 addresses hot-dip galvanized fasteners within its defined scope. ISO 4042 addresses electroplated fastener coating systems, including requirements and recommendations to minimize hydrogen-embrittlement risk. Their scopes and requirements are not interchangeable.

Use applicable product and coating standards, including required versions and revisions. Require the responsible technical team to address level or process limitations before production release. This procurement list does not approve specific grades/coating combinations, nor does it specify processing and tightening parameters.

5. Include the requirements in the inquiry form

Use separate order lines for different sizes, grades, and coating systems. Attach control drawings or project specifications and clearly indicate missing information.

Add this note:

If the technical requirements are still uncertain, please request a budget quotation to explain its assumptions. Resolve these assumptions before authorizing production.

6. Review Test Evidence and the Quoted Scope

Where salt-spray testing is specified, agree on the method, duration, acceptance criteria and reporting scope. Check which product, coating system and samples the report covers. Such a report can support the stated test requirement; it does not establish a universal outdoor service life.

The American Galvanizers Association's discussion of zinc coatings for fasteners explains limitations of accelerated corrosion testing for zinc coatings. Do not convert test hours directly into years or compare reports without checking their conditions.

Compare prices only after aligning product, finish, mating parts, inspection, documents, quantities and delivery terms. Carry approved deviations into the order. On receipt, check identification and document coverage, and complete the inspections required by the agreed acceptance plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if only "galvanized" is written on the quotation?

Require the supplier to determine the coating process, specifications, and complete processing system. Resolve any discrepancies with the RFQ before accepting the quotation.

2. What if the nut will not fit the coated bolt?

Identify the affected items and request technical disposition. Do not force the parts into service or rework threads or coating without an approved procedure. Fit alone also does not establish material, strength or coating compliance.

3. Can the supplier's salt spray report replace coating inspection?

No. A salt-spray test report cannot replace the coating inspection required by the purchase specification. Check what the report actually covers and complete the inspections required for the order.
